The Tennessee Department of Transportation [TDOT] is currently making improvements to Highway 30 at the intersection of New Union Road and White Oak Road.

“TDOT has a project underway to reconstruct a 0.3-mile section of Highway 30 in Rhea County from west of New Union Road/White Oak Road to Sky Drive,” said TDOT Community Relations Officer Jennifer Flynn. “The project will improve drainage, alignment and add shoulders and left turn lanes on a portion of Highway 30 at the intersection of White Oak Road/New Union Road.

“The project will also add shoulders on White Oak Road and New Union Road near the SR-30 intersection.”

Flynn said that, additionally, the project will:

• Remove the long corrugated metal pipe beneath Highway 30 and replace it with a new concrete box culvert at Rattan Branch and install several other new pipes to improve drainage;

• Realign White Oak Road and New Union Road to intersect at 90 degrees with Highway 30 and improve elevation of side roads as they tie into Highway 30 to improve sight distance; and

• Realign Highway 30 and lower the earth slope on east end of project to further improve sight distance at intersection.

Flynn said the cost of the project is $2.7 million, and Twin K Construction Inc., based in Helenwood, Tenn., is the contractor on the project. The estimated completion date for the project is spring 2020.
