YMCA facilities across the State of Tennessee will no longer offer SilverSneakers programs beginning Jan. 1, 2020, according to a news release by SilverSneakers.
However, this change will not affect SilverSneakers programs or the method of payment for the programs at Rc3.
“The SilverSneakers program at Rc3, which currently serves 100s of people weekly, is one of our most cherished programs,” Cindy Horton, chairman of the Rc3 board said. “We look forward to continually serving and growing alongside our SilverSneakers members and hopefully welcoming some new faces.”
Horton went on to explain that many health insurance companies include SilverSneakers as a benefit in their policies. As a result, the costs for participating in the SilverSneakers program or other fitness programs at Rc3 may be covered by insurance.
SilverSneakers began in 1992 as a nationally organized program focused on providing appropriate fitness activities for senior adults. Each exercise session is designed to increase the participants’ muscular strength and range of motion needed for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic bands and exercise balls are used to provide resistance. All individuals are encouraged to participate at their comfort level by modifying some exercises or by simply sitting out on others.
In addition to the basic fitness classes, also available at Rc3 are SilverSneakers Yoga, Low Impact Cardio Circuit, Zumba Gold (dance class) and Weight Room Circuit. All classes are taught by certified instructors, Rachel Carril, Annalyn Eversole, Melba Frederick, Kristi Gilmore, and Chase Harvey.
“Seniors who are currently exercising at YMCA facilities in neighboring counties are invited to enroll in the SilverSneakers programs at Rc3 where their insurance coverage will be honored,” Horton said.
In addition to exercise sessions, seniors at Rc3 enjoy lunch and learns, fun days and birthday party luncheons.
