U.S. Army Master Sgt. Jerry Lee Cates, 76, of Dayton Mountain, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at Parkridge Medical Center with his daughters by his side.
Jerry was born on Nov. 8, 1942, in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army. He also served in the National Guard and Auxiliary Coast Guard. After retiring from the military, he drove a truck for 26 years before retiring to fish, farm and spend more time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 53 years, Pearly Simmons Cates; daughter, Tracey Sinclair; and brother, Dwayne Nipper.
He is survived by daughters, Meredith Revis and Shannon Cates, of Dayton, and Josee Hipp, of France; brothers, David Williams, Harley Nipper, Terry Nipper and Tim Nipper; sister, Yvonne Galager; eight grandchildren, Jaime Cates, Jordan Brown, Jessica Hancock, Kevin Sillien, Paige Hancock, Cameron Sinclair, Noah Sinclair and Lacy Sinclair; and two great-grandchildren, Gabriel McCloud and Sarah McCloud.
Funeral services will be held in Bonifay, Fla., at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2019, at the Shady Grove Baptist Church with Brother Darrell officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his wife and daughter in Shady Grove Baptist Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 10, 2019, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.
A memorial service will be held at Walden’s Ridge Baptist Church on Dayton Mountain at a later date.
