Athletes representing Rhea of Sunshine traveled to Nashville, Tenn. May 17-18 to compete in the annual State Special Olympic Games and several returned home to Rhea County with medals for their efforts in the event.
Rhea of Sunshine Executive Director Michelle Cunningham said everyone had a great time enjoying the Opening Ceremony on Friday before the competitions on Saturday at Lipscomb University and the Williamson County Indoor Sports Complex.
The State Summer Games are the always a popular event with over 2,500 athletes, coaches, volunteers and family members attending annually. Chick-Fil-A provided lunch for all athletes, coaches and event volunteers again this year.
On the group unified bocce team, Rhea of Sunshine placed third in its region and received the bronze medal. The team was composed of Rita Poland, Michelle Cunningham, Cary Pelfrey, Charlie Hickman.
In the individual bocee teams, Rita Poland and Michelle Cunningham received Gold Medals in their region and Charlie Hickman and Cary Pelfrey received Silver medals.
For the softball throw, Allen Bissaillon won Gold and Jacob Bloxson won Silver; both also won medals in the relay race.
After the competition, the athletes enjoyed a Hollywood-themed party on Saturday night.
