Francisco Campos and Caleb Hickman represented the Rhea County High School (RCHS) Golden Eagle wrestling team at the TSSAA individual state-wrestling tournament on Thursday, Feb. 20, which was held at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center, in Franklin, Tennessee.
Hickman, a freshman, competed in the 113-pound weight division, while teammate, Campos, a sophomore, competed in the 170-pound weight class. Both Eagle mat men placed fourth in last week’s Region 4-AAA tournament held at RCHS on Saturday, Feb. 15.
At the state meet, Hickman suffered a loss by pin to Knoxville Hall's Samuel Hutchison in the opening round, but bounced back with a 7-0 decision win over Arlington High School's Austin Parks in the consolation round one. In the consolation round two match, Hickman lost by a tech fall to Soddy Daisy's Hunter Bankes.
Campos suffered a 7-2 decision loss to Centennial's Jacob Knight in the first round, but won the consolation round one match with a pin over Arlington's Mason Hull. In the consolation round two match, Campos lost by pin to Bradley Central's Caleb Jeffers.
Despite the losses and not placing, Eagle head wrestling coach, Jace Greene, praised the pair’s performances on the day and the season.
“I'm very proud of the hard work that Francisco and Caleb put in this season,” said Greene. “I'm proud of the entire team. We were a young team this year and we really relied on our veterans for leadership and they stepped up.
Caleb is a freshman and Francisco is a sophomore and it was really good for them to experience a state tournament at an early point in their career,” continued Greene. ”I'm very proud of them!”
