Rhea County’s United Way Fish the Chick tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31, on Dayton’s Lake Chickamauga.
In 2012, The United Way Board of Directors created a special grant designated to meet the needs of women and children in the Rhea County community. Concurrently, a handful of women leaders came up with the idea to host a bass tournament calling it Fish the Chick and needed a partner to help get it off the ground.
Jenny Nevans, a BASS sponsored lady bass angler and Christine Ralph Executive Director of UW talked and a partnership was formed with proceeds going to support the grant with additional funds.
The first committee included Jenny Brooks Nevans, Dr. Lori Reid, Stacey Swafford, Stacey Gates, Kathy Griffin and Kim Cranfield.
For consecutive years since it’s inception, the event has grown each year. The bottom line, more women and children have received services that better their everyday life through proceeds from this annual fishing tournament.
First place in the tournament will take home a guaranteed $1,000 prize. However, register anglers will also have a little more up for grabs as Bunch Marine will give away a 2019 Triton 18 TX equipped with a Mercury 115 Pro XS 4-stroke outboard, trolling motor and on-board charger to any registered angler who catches a new Tennessee State largemouth record. Gabe Keen has held that title since 2015 when he bagged 15-pound, 3-ounce monster from Lake Chickamauga.
Officials said the event raises up to $5,000 per year and last year’s event drew 34 registered boats. They are hopeful the possibility of winning a brand new boat will lure in even more anglers this year.
Cost to register for this year’s tournament is $60 per angler ($70 to be include in the Big Fish pot). Those who miss online registration are welcome to visit Monkey Town Brewing Company in downtown Dayton to register on Friday, Aug. 30 between the hours of 5-7 p.m.
Sponsors for this year’s tournament include Bunch Marine, Platinum Salon & Spa, Eagle Exxon, Monkey Town Brewing Company, BWS Properties, Dayton Boat Dock, Adam Sims Group, Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits, Stealth 1 Charging, BoatSticks, Rip-rap Fishing Adventures, River Country 101.1, French’s Shoes &Boots and Vanderwall Funeral Home.
