Dayton man charged with rape of 13-year-old girl

Last updated: 9:58 AM, 07/08/2010

Walter L. Johnson, 43 of Illinois Avenue in Dayton, has been arrested for the alleged rape of a 13-year old girl on Saturday afternoon.

The young girl visiting Dayton Housing Authority's Taylor Hills development left a friend's apartment to retrieve items she had forgotten in another.

According to the victim, she entered the relative's apartment and went to the bedroom to locate the items. As she turned to leave, Johnson was standing behind her blocking her exit. Johnson picked her up, tossed her on the bed and raped her, the victim told police.

After a struggle, the girl freed herself of Johnson's grip and fled the apartment. She ran back to her friend's apartment and called the police.

Dayton Police Sgt. Chris Sneed and Officer Darrell Bell arrived shortly after the alleged rape took place. As they were questioning the victim, Johnson who is known by the family, was spotted walking near the railroad tracks.

According to Sneed, Johnson on seeing the police started walking away from them going toward Bi-Lo grocery store. Johnson was pursued by the officers and taken into custody for the alleged rape.

The victim was escorted by Officer Bell to Rhea Medical Center for an examination.

Johnson is currently being held without bond in the Rhea County Jail awaiting an April 16 appearance in Rhea County Circuit Court.
