What started as a doctor's recommendation to get more exercise turned into a neck loaded down with Olympic medals for Rhea County resident Marbra Bishop.
Bishop said she needed incentive to keep her active, and the Senior Olympics provided just that.
"I have a blockage in my heart and high cholesterol, so it's very important that I eat healthy and exercise because medicine is not an option [due to liver problems]," Bishop said. "The Olympics is just what the doctor ordered. It was a wonderful experience that I thank God I was able to participate."
In all, Bishop won 10 medals in the women's 50- to 54-year-old age group at the Southeast Tennessee Districts, held in late April.
She took home gold in the 50-yard free style swim, softball throw, hot shot basketball competition and three-on-three basketball, which she plays with teammates from Athens.
She also secured gold in bowling doubles.
Bishop netted a silver medal in mixed doubles tennis, in which she partnered with her husband, David, as well as in basketball free throws, singles and doubles pickleball, and bowling singles.
"If it wasn't for God, none of it would have been possible. It will do me proud to represent Rhea County in the State Senior Olympics," Bishop said.
Bishop will compete in four events - hot shot basketball, free throws, three-on-three basketball and pickleball doubles - at this year's State Senior Olympics, slated for mid-July.
