Dayton National Gavin Curtin connects with a pitch during the 6-year-old Dizzy Dean District Tournament, held at the Jim Barnes Baseball Complex on Market Street over the weekend.
If you noticed an influx of people and cars in
downtown Dayton this weekend, it was likely due to the 6- and 12-year-old Dizzy Dean District
Tournaments being held at the Jim Barnes Sports Complex on Market Street.
Teams from
Ooltewah, Harrison, Brainerd, South Pittsburg, Snow Hill, Sequatchie County, Middle Valley, Bradley
North, Blue Springs and Soddy Daisy flooded the town for the five-day event, which was set to
conclude Tuesday evening.
At press time, the 6-year-old Dayton American All-Stars were slated
to face Ooltewah in the championship game Tuesday night, and the 12-year-old Dayton Blue Jays were
scheduled to take on the Harrison Aces.
The older team made it to the finale with a
triumphant comeback through the loser's bracket. After dropping their first game to the Middle
Valley Rebels, the Blue Jays went on to defeat East Brainerd, South Pittsburg, the Harrison Cougars
and Middle Valley in a rematch to make it to the finale.
The Dayton Americans also rebounded
through the loser's bracket, beating Snow Hill, Bradley North and finally Harrison 25-22 in the
bottom bracket finals.
Earlier in the tourney, the 6-year-old Dayton Nationals were knocked
off by Bradley North and the 12-year-old Dayton Thunder bowed to East Brainerd.
Across the
region, the other Dayton Dizzy Dean teams are still in the hunt for postseason glory.
The
10-year-olds are slated to play Snow Hill for their district championship, while the 9-year-olds
will face Middle Valley for the title.
The 8-year-olds are in their championship game against
Bradley North, and the 7-year-olds have already won their district title by defeating Ooltewah
15-14.
