Though the thermometer outside has been
recording scorching temperatures this week, Mississippi Braves pitcher Cory Gearrin has been
even hotter.
The Rhea County native has pitched 10 and two-thirds innings without allowing a
run, and has set down 12 straight batters in the past week.
Gearrin recorded four outs
against four batters faced Saturday night at AT&T Field while facing the Chattanooga Lookouts in
front of his hometown crowd.
Though the Lookouts won 5-4 in extra innings, Gearrin didn't
miss a step.
On Monday the right-handed reliever continued to sizzle, pitching shutout ball
for two and two-thirds innings. He earned his second save with the M-Braves organization, which he
joined on May 28, less than a month ago.
Gearrin entered the game with a precarious one-run
lead and the tying run on board but set down seven straight batters as well as the inherited
runner on a double play.
The 2004 Rhea County High School graduate allowed no hits and
struck out two Birmingham Barons.
Gearrin now boasts a 1.88 ERA, the lowest on the
Mississippi Braves roster.
The Braves will continue their home series with Birmingham through
Saturday before traveling to face the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx.
