Though the Dayton Golf and Country Club plays
host to an array of fundraisers over the summer, the cause of its most recent tournament strikes a
cord with nearly everyone.
The Relay Fore Life Golf Tournament brought in 40 participants in
its debut year.
The tourney, held Wednesday, June 17, helped raise funds for the annual
Relay for Life, slated for Friday, Aug. 14, at the Delaware Avenue Sports Complex in Dayton,
starting at 6 p.m.
Relay for Life is the largest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society,
which raises thousands of dollars annually for research and patient resources.
"We were very
excited about the turn out of our first annual golf tournament and the money we raised for the Relay
for Life," said Jennifer Shaver, team recruitment and retention committee chair for Rhea
County. "It was our first tournament, and we do plan on having another next year."
The
first-place team, sponsored by the Howard Johnson in Spring City, was made up of Brownie Boles,
Charles Whitamore, Ray Talley and Gary Penny. Each received a two-night stay in a two-bedroom cabin
from Eagles Ridge Resort in Pigeon Forge.
Finishing in second place were Jimmy Norris, Champ
Prince, Jason Gibby and Ryan Heiskell. Third-place went to Craig Patteron, John Purser, Andy Morgan
and Joe Wilson.
Bobby Colbaugh won the longest drive competition, and Bryan Gunter took top
honors for closest to the pin.
