Rhea County had some gems on the baseball diamond this weekend, as area little leaguers competed in postseason tournaments.
Three Dayton Dizzy Dean teams won their respective district tournaments this week and three more finished second.
"Every age group we have played for a championship, and we represented pretty well," Dayton Dizzy Dean President David Lytle said.
According to Lytle, the districts are bigger then ever this year, boasting eight to 13 teams each. More opponents makes for a longer road to the championship, but Dayton's pint-sized ball players were up to the task.
The 7-, 8- and 10-year-old Dayton All-Stars took top honors in their district finales, defeating Ooltewah, Bradley North and Snow Hill, respectively.
Meanwhile, the 6-, 9- and 12-year-olds came in runners-up for their district titles.
All six teams, as well as the B-teams from the 7-, 8- and 12-year-olds, will advance to the state tournament.
The 6- and 12-year-old state tourneys will be held in Harrison, while Soddy Daisy will play host to the 10- year-old age group. The 7-year-olds are slated to play in Ooltewah. Those four tournaments will conclude by Wednesday.
The 8- and 9-year-old tournaments are slated to begin July 10 at a yet to be determined destination.
