The 7-year-old Dayton Dizzy Dean All-Stars are
World Series bound following a third-place finish in their state tournament Monday night in
Ooltewah.
The hometown boys bested Harrison's All-Stars 20-19 with the help of a walk-off,
RBI double by Keaton Ray in the final inning.
Jared Fisher scored the winning run and
finished the game with four singles, while Ray had a five-for-five night with four RBIs.
Dayton held a sizable lead for most of the game after a seven-run opening inning, a six-run
second and a four-run third. Harrison began to pick up steam in the fourth and fifth innings,
however, to pull ahead 19-17.
Third baseman Dawson Lytle tallied three crucial put-outs in
the final inning, catching a line drive, running down a base runner and a relay play to Kyle Shaver
at first, to keep Dayton's Dizzy Deaners in the game.
A number of Dayton All-Stars
contributed to the double digit run total. Jonah Butler and Jacob Gardner were four-for-four from
the batter's box. Aaron Worthington and Jackson Harveston doled out three hits each, while Evan
Parnell and Cooper Ruehling cracked two and Rachel Hostetler added one hit.
The Dayton
All-Stars fell to the East Brainerd Mean Green 21-9 in the semifinals, but will travel to Ringgold,
Ga., on July 16 for the World Series nonetheless.
The Dayton Dizzy Dean 6- and 10-year-old
teams also concluded their state tournament runs this week. The 6-year-olds fell to Harrison in
Monday night's quarterfinals, while the 10-year-old ended their bid against the Middle Valley
Mustangs on Sunday.
As of press time, the Dayton 12-year-olds were still alive in their
bracket which was slated to conclude on Thursday.
