One Graysville police officer has been placed on unpaid suspension due to a probe launched on the department by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, officials said this week.

According to Graysville Police Chief Thomas Mahoney, officer Greg Higgins has been placed on unpaid suspension pending the results of the investigation.

Mahoney told The Herald-News Thursday that the TBI launched an investigation in late July.

TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm confirmed Friday the investigation is still ongoing. She said the bureau is looking into the department's involvement with money that had allegedly gone missing.

She said she could not release any more information while the investigation continues.

Mahoney said he actually initiated the TBI investigation by calling the district attorney's office after he learned of alleged misconduct within his department.

"Any time a police officer moves beyond a policy infraction into a criminal act, TBI does the investigation," he said. "It's so that everybody will be looked at."

Mahoney said he couldn't release any more details until the investigation is closed either.

He did say that TBI agents were in Graysville earlier this week collecting evidence for the probe.
