Middle school volleyball season got underway this week, and Spring City Middle and Dayton City schools jumped straight into the frying pan with an in-county rivalry contest.

The heated match went to three games, with the DCS Lady Sweatbees emerging victorious.

It looked like Spring City was in for an easy win after the Lady Bulldogs took the first game 25-15.

The Lady Bulldogs took off to a 4-1 lead early on before pulling ahead 18-10 later in the period. Alexis Neal added three service points, including one ace, for Spring City to put them on top 21-11.

Though Dayton City had a brief rally, the game ended on a botched serve with a 10-point margin of victory for the Lady Bulldogs.

The second game was much closer, however, and Dayton City pulled out a 26-24 win.

The Lady Sweatbees kept things tight with the help of service points by Madeline Klee, and an ace by Kenzie Freeman pulled DCS within three points of the lead, 18-15.

It was three aces by Lady Sweatbee Megan Millard, however, that knotted the game up.

Another service point by the 'Bees put them up 24-23, but Spring City won a volley to stay in the game, 24-24.

The game ended up being settled when a Spring City volley hit the ceiling, effectively losing them the point.

In the final set, Dayton City continued its hot streak to take a 5-1 lead early on.

Spring City found its stride, however, and pulled back in it to trail 7-6.

Lady Sweatbee Lindsay Smith's five service points off the bench put Dayton City up 12-6, but it was Millard who sealed the game with the final two service points, 15-7.

DCS will host Lake Forest Middle School on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Spring City's schedule was not available at press time.
