Dayton man charged with rape of 13-year-old

Last updated: 9:58 AM, 07/08/2010

A Dayton man was arrested Sunday and charged with raping a 13-year-old acquaintance.

David Wayne Slater, 20, of Old Washington Highway, went to the home of an acquaintance in Dayton at about 9 a.m. Saturday. The girl said when Slater found her parents weren't home, he raped her even though she told him to stop several times, according to Chief Deputy Charles Byrd who investigates crimes against children for the Rhea County Sheriff's Department.

Slater left about 15 minutes after arriving, Byrd said.

After telling her mother about the attack, the mother contacted Deputy Rocky Potter who told her to take the girl to Rhea Medical Center. Potter then had Rhea County Central Dispatch contact Byrd.

The chief deputy found Slater at another Old Washington Highway home and brought him to the sheriff's department for questioning. Slater eventually gave Byrd a statement consistent with some of the information provided by the girl.

Specimens were taken from both Slater and the girl for a rape kit.

Slater is being held at the Rhea County Jail pending payment of a $65,000 bond. He is scheduled for arraignment on Friday.
