Two Graysville men charged with attempted rape

Last updated: 9:58 AM, 07/08/2010

Two Graysville men have been charged with attempting to rape a woman in a field off Garrison Cemetery Road on Friday.

Ronald Clinton Heard, 50, of Brenda Lane, and Lonnie Smith Jr., 44, of Iris Drive, were arrested Saturday night and charged with attempted rape.

Late Friday night, as the 36-year-old victim walked to Jiffy 7 Til 11 on Iowa Avenue, she saw Heard, whom she said she knew very well, and his cousin in a small red truck, according to Detective B.J. Johnson with the Rhea County Sheriff's Department.

She had once already walked to the store to buy beer for her mother who lives in an apartment in Dayton Housing Authority's Taylor Hills Development, according to Johnson's report. She forgot to buy cigarettes so she made the second trip.

The woman asked Heard for a ride and he drove to Jiffy where she bought cigarettes, according to the report.

As all three drank beer and Heard pulled out of the parking lot, she noticed Heard was driving in the wrong direction to take her home, the report states. Heard told the woman they were going to ride around.

After traveling through the country, down an old road and through a field by the river, the victim reported both men tried to take off her clothes, according to the report. They grabbed and pulled on her and she again asked to be taken home. Heard got rough with her, the report continues, and she began screaming and running through the woods.

After getting lost, she found a house with lights on inside and knocked on the door for help. Carl King called the sheriff's department, and the woman was transported to Rhea Medical Center by Rhea Ambulance Service where she was treated and released, according to the report.

Johnson found witnesses and evidence that gave him probable cause to charge both men with attempted rape, according to the arrest warrant. She had many scars on her and was bleeding.

Heard and Smith will be arraigned in Rhea County General Sessions Court on Friday. They are each free on a $7,500 bond.
