Who did you vote for in yesterday’s election?

We all have thrones—ourselves, a president, a government, a political party, stuff, money, and our family are a few possibilities. These are things we trust in, depend on, get our deepest joy from, and bow before. In their proper place, these can even be good things but anything that substitutes for God Himself is our idol. Ouch.

Creeds, doctrinal statements, and even songs declare our allegiance and put the truths of Scripture into memorable settings. They don’t replace Scripture; they highlight them and teach us. Here is one I especially like about THE Throne (play it a few dozen times on YouTube).

Before the Throne of God Above

Before the throne of God above

I have a strong and perfect plea

A great high priest whose name is Love

Whoever lives and pleads for me.

My name is graven on His hands

My name is written on His heart

I know that while in Heaven He stands

No tongue can bid me thence depart.

No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair

And tells me of the guilt within

Upwards I look and see Him there

Who made an end to all my sin.

Because the sinless Savior died

My sinful soul is counted free

For God the Just is satisfied

To look on Him and pardon me

To look on Him and pardon me.

Behold Him there, the risen Lamb

My perfect spotless Righteousness

The great unchanging all I Am

The King of glory and of grace.

One with Himself, I cannot die

My soul is purchased by His blood.

My life is hid with Christ on high

With Christ, my Savior and my God

With Christ, my Savior and my God.

(Repeat)

Ultimately, there is only one throne that matters. Won’t you bow before it today, no matter who you voted for yesterday?
