Rhea County preps for July 4th celebrations

There will be no shortage of Fourth of July events in Rhea County next weekend, as both Spring City and Graysville are both set to host Independence day celebrations on Saturday, June 30.

There will be no shortage of Fourth of July events in Rhea County next weekend, as both Spring City and Graysville are both set to host Independence day celebrations on Saturday.

The Spring City Parks and Recreation Board will hold their annual Shake The Lake celebration on Saturday, June 30, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Veterans Park.  

As in previous years, Shake the Lake will also feature the Mister and Miss Firecracker Pageant with registration opening at 9 a.m. with the pageant beginning at 10 a.m.  

Sign-ups for the Watermelon and Pickle Eating Contests start at noon with the Pickle Eating Contest beginning at 1 p.m., followed by the Watermelon Eating Contest at 1:30 p.m.

The Duck Race will be held at 5 p.m. Music and live bands will perform from 5:30 p.m. until dark when a fireworks display concludes the day’s activities.

In the south end of Rhea County, the City of Graysville Volunteer Fire Department will hold FreedomFest 2017 on Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m. at Kristopher’s Kingdom Park.  

The event will include live music, including the Barely Kickin’ Band, food, fun and games.  

A waterslide and bounce house will be available from 4 to 8 p.m. with a $5 charge, allowing unlimited access to both activities. Fireworks will start at 10 p.m.
