Gary Drinkard

Gary Drinkard died peacefully on Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Vidma and Gertrude Drinkard; and sister, Ernestine Drinkard Peacock.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary; son, David (Betsy); and grandsons, Grayson and Cooper, all of Katy, Texas; son, Robert (Anissa Samilpa); and grandsons, Liam and Garrett, all of Harlingen, Texas; and nieces, Karen Peacock of Katy, Texas, and Brenda Peacock Allen of Loxley, Ala.

Gary was born and raised in Fulton, Ala. He graduated from Clarke County High School in Grove Hill, Ala., then received his B.S. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Virginia. After retiring from Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas, following a 27-year career, he found his dream place in Spring City. He enjoyed his retirement years sitting on his porch gazing at his magnificent view of Watts Bar Lake.

Gary was an active member of the Rhea County Historical Society and the Rhea County Republican Party. Prior to moving to Tennessee, he was a former president of the Harris County Texas Historical Society, and was interested in Texas history. He loved his cats and enjoyed reading, his friends, playing bridge and the outdoors; especially while on his tractor.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
