SCMS Bulldogs survive first round, defeat Jefferson 22-6
The Spring City Middle School Bulldog football team traveled to Oak Ridge on Thursday and defeated the Jefferson Middle School Eagles 22-6 in the first round of the playoffs.
The Bulldogs suffered a season opening 28-24 loss to the Eagles in Spring City on Aug. 5.
In Thursday’s contest, Jefferson struck first with a 6-play, 71-yard touchdown drive to go up 6-0 with 3:37 left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs answered on their ensuing drive by marching 80 yards in eight plays, capped off by a Kaiden Rector 4-yard TD run. Along the drive, Zane Walker had runs of 14 and 36 yards, with the help of Lelan Dye making two pancake blocks to move SCMS into Eagle territory. The 2-point try was no good and the game was tied at 6-6 with 7:54 remaining in the second.
SCMS forced a Jefferson punt and took possession at the Bulldog 38-yard line. A few plays later, Rector connected with Ethan Cunningham on a 40-yard TD pass. Cunningham scored the 2-point try and the Bulldogs took a 14-6 with 1:15 left before the half.
The teams exchanged some series in the third quarter, but no points were scored, as the Bulldogs carried the 14-6 advantage into the final quarter, as they were driving.
The Bulldogs’ final scoring drive went for 19 plays, covering 93 yards and chewing off a lot of minutes from the clock in the process. Tyler Lee scored on a 2-yard TD run, followed up by Cunningham’s 2-point conversion to make the score 22-6, in favor of the Bulldogs, with 5:55 left in the game.
Jefferson’s next and final drive ended on an Austin Fugate interception to give the Bulldogs the ball at their own 47-yard line with 2:45 showing on the clock. In the same Eagle drive, Gauge Range had two tackles, including a sack to help stifle the drive.
Walker finished the game with 93 yard on 11 carries, while Rector was 2-for-2 passing, with 64 yards and a TD. Rector also had eight touches for 24 yard rushing and a TD.
The Bulldogs are now 7-2 on the season and will face the winner of CAK/Norris in the championship game on Thursday, Oct. 7. At press time on Friday, Oct. 1, the Spring City’s opponent had yet to be determined. See the Wednesday edition for an update.
Three RMS soccer players named all conference
The Rhea Middle School Lady Eagles’ soccer team finished up a good season Tuesday evening with an overall strong performance in the second round of the Southeast Tennessee Athletic Conference (SETAC) tournament, falling to the Ocoee Middle School Lady Colts.
The Lady Eagles dominated much of the play, especially in the second half but we’re not able to stop Ocoee’s outside shooting with a final score of 0-4.
Leading up to this game, the Lady Eagles beat Chilhowee 3-0 in Monday’s home opening round at Eagle Stadium. Kloe Reeves achieved her second hat trick of the season, as she scored all three goals for the RMS squad.
Addy Beasley said, “It has been an honor to be a team captain and help my fellow teammates grow as players and even as people. I hope to see them play in high school with me.”
All conference players for Rhea Middle are as follows: Kloe Reeves 8th grade, forward and midfielder; Holly Dyer 8th grade, midfielder and center back; Addy Beasley 8th grade, center back.
