The Rhea Middle School Eagles’ football team hosted the Sweetwater Middle School Wildcats at Eagle Stadium on Thursday, fell behind early, fought back late in the game, but was edged out, sustaining a 28-24 loss.

It seemed the Wildcats jumped off the bus and scored two touchdowns in the first quarter before the Eagles knew what hit them. Sweetwater scored again and carried a 20-0 lead into the half.

The Eagles could have folded the tents and called it a night at halftime, but they chose to launch a comeback with second half touchdowns from Kaden Knox, Kris McGinnes and Makye Hyatt. Knox’s score was a QB sneak, while McGinnes had a 15-yard TD run and Hyatt’s score was a 45-yard rush.

RMS scored late and added the 2-point conversion from Hyatt to bring the score to 28-24, in favor of the Wildcats, with less than two minutes left in the game.

The Eagles attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but Sweetwater recovered and ran out the clock on its possession, sealing the win for the Wildcats.

RMS will travel and face the Dayton City School Sweatbees on Thursday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Gabbert Field, which is located behind RC3.
