After seizing a district win on the road against the Cookeville High School Cavaliers on Monday, March 29, the Rhea County High School Golden Eagle baseball team hosted and suffered a 14-7 home loss to Cookeville the following night, on Tuesday, March 30.
Cookeville took advantage of a slow offensive start by the Eagles by taking an early lead. The Eagle bats came alive for a late rally, with Rex Pendergrass’s three-run shot, followed with a back-to-back homer by Keaton Ray, with a solo blast.
The Cavaliers tallied 13 hits to Rhea’s eight. Pendergrass added a single and Ray a double in the game, as Ray went 2-for-3 and Pendergrass went 2-for-2. Austin Brackett went 2-for-4, with two singles, while Cade Cook and Jalen Fisher both went 1-for-2 at the plate, with a single apiece. John Combs suffered the loss on the mound.
Run scorers for the Eagles included Cook (2), Pendergrass (2), Ray (2) and Eli Gates (1).
The Eagles, now 4-6 (1-1) on the season, are scheduled to host Warren County on Monday, April 5, in District 6-AAA action, with the first pitch slated for 7 p.m. On Tuesday, April 6, the Eagles will hit the road for the second game in the series with Warren County, in McMinnville, with varsity game starting at 7 p.m.
