The Rhea Middle School (RMS) Eagle basketball teams competed in the 2020 Area Four Southeast Tennessee Athletic Conference (SETAC) tournament on Monday and Thursday, which was hosted by Ocoee Middle School, in Cleveland.

The Lady Eagles battled, but fell to the Cleveland Middle School Lady Raiders 44-18 in Monday’s opening round. Cleveland led 18-5 at the break. The RMS girls scored eight points in the third to Cleveland’s 12. The Lady Raiders won the fourth 15-5.

Lady Eagle scorers included Lainey Fitzgerald (10), Allie Shaver (5), Hannah Pankey (2) and Emma Reeves (1).

The Lady Eagles faced the Ocoee Middle School Lady Colts and fell 52-13 on Thursday night in a battle for third place. The loss ended the Lady Eagles’ season.

Lady Eagle scorers included Fitzgerald (5), Isabella Scott (2), Sydney Hampton (2), Shaver (2), and Lakyn Lockhart (2).

In Monday’s first round action for the RMS boys’ team, the Eagles faced the Ocoee Colts and suffered a 57-28 setback.

The Eagles trailed 14-5 after the first quarter, but a scoreless second quarter to Ocoee’s 18 put RMS behind 32-5 at the break. The Eagles fought back in the third quarter with 15 points to the Colts’ 16, and trailed 48-20 headed to the final period.

Eagle scorers included Sean Norman (9), Briley Mayberry (9), Kaleb Martin (8) and Maurice Shirley (2).

In Thursday night’s game for third place, the Eagles took the Lake Forest Bruins to overtime, but fell 44-41 in a thriller.

The Eagles fell behind 8-3 in the first quarter, but cranked out 17 second period points to Lake Forest’s eight to take a 20-16 lead at the half. The Bruins fired back in the third with 20 points to the Eagles’ 12 and led 36-32 headed to the fourth. RMS outscored Lake Forest 7-3 to tie the game and force overtime.

The Bruins won the battle in overtime, outscoring RMS 5-2 to claim the win. Eagle starters, Martin, Mayberry and Shirley all fouled out down the stretch. The narrow, heartbreaking loss ended the Eagles’ season.

Eagle scorers included Martin (19), Norman (11), Mayberry (8) and Branson Wilkey (3).
