On Monday, July 20, Rhea County High School (RCHS) Director of Athletics, Jeremy Fitzgerald, announced the hiring of John Walker as the new boys’ basketball coach.
Walker assumes the role after Daniel Curtis, who was head coach of the Eagles for the last four seasons, accepted the McMinn Central High School job in late June.
Walker, a US History and World History teacher at RCHS, has served the Eagle basketball program as an assistant for the last six seasons. He brings 11 years experience as a boys’ assistant coach and two years head coaching experience to the Eagle court this fall. Prior to landing at RCHS, Walker was head coach of the Stone Memorial High School Lady Panthers’ program.
Walker is excited about the opportunity and looks forward to stepping into the Eagles’ head coaching position.
“I am very thankful for the opportunity that the administration has given me to become the head boys basketball coach at Rhea County High School,” said Walker of his opportunity. “Basketball has always been a passion of mine and I love helping student-athletes grow as players and as young men. I have been a part of the [Eagle] program for six years as an assistant coach so I am familiar with the players and other assistant coaches. I am excited to continue those relationships and build new ones as well.”
Walker and his assistant coaches will be holding tryouts for the 2020-21 season on Wednesday, July 29. Please see the full announcement in Local Sports Round-up at bottom left side of this page for further details.
