The Dayton City School (DCS) Sweatbee basketball teams began their conference tournament last week, with Lenoir City Middle School being the host school.

The Lady Sweatbees faced the Rockwood Lady Tigers in the opening round, played on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The Lady Tigers claimed a 32-3 victory over DCS, thus ending the Lady Sweatbees’ season. Scorers for the Lady Sweatbees were Jamiah Rigby with two points and Charlotte Brock with one.

The DCS boys had to wait a few more days to begin their tournament play, as they were originally slated to begin action on Thursday, Jan. 24. Due to illness, Lenoir City Schools were closed on Thursday and Friday.

After a redrafting of bracket dates, the tournament resumed on Monday, Jan. 27, with the Sweatbees challenging the Athens Middle School Cougars, and claiming a 51-27 victory.

Athens took a narrow 14-13 first quarter lead. Kyler Akin dialed up the first of his three 3-pointers in the first, while Dawson Mickel added a trey and a basket. Bryce Dupre tallied five of his game-high 22 points in the opening period.

DCS cranked up the defensive pressure in the second, shutting out Athens 11-0, as the Sweatbees claimed a 24-14 halftime lead. Akin added two more treys in the second, as Dupre added three and Ethan Davis charted two.

The Sweatbees won the final two quarters and outscored the Cougars 27-16 to claim the 24-point first round win.

Sweatbee scorers included Dupre (22), Akin (11), Rex Pendergrass (7), Mickel (5), Davis (4) and Andrew Morgan (2).

The Sweatbees’ next round of the bracket will be on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 5:45 p.m., at Lenoir City Middle School. They will face the winner of the North Middle/Lenoir City game, which took place Tuesday night. Results of that game were not available at press time.
