In the first county basketball matchup of the season, the Rhea Middle School Eagle clubs faced off with the Spring City Middle School Bulldog teams at Spring City Elementary School on Monday night.

The Lady Eagles edged out a 33-29 victory over the Lady Bulldogs, while the Bulldogs snagged a 56-13 win over the Eagles.

Lady Eagles 33, Lady Bulldogs 29

The first quarter was an indicator of how the game played out, as the Lady Eagles battled to a 5-3 lead after the first quarter, with Allie Shaver and Cammie Ruehling scoring two points apiece and Lakyn Lockhart had one point for the Lady Eagles. Kailah Kile dropped in a basket and Summer Jenkins sank a free throw for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Eagles pulled away in the second period, outscoring the Spring City girls 12-6 and held a 17-9 lead at the half. Ruehling, who led all scorers in the game with 15 for Rhea Middle, tallied seven points in the second quarter.

Kile paced the Lady Bulldogs in the third with five points, as SCMS outscored RMS 11-10 and only trailed 27-20 headed to the fourth quarter.

Jenkins led the Lady Bulldogs rally in the fourth with four of their nine points to Rhea Middle’s six points, as SCMS pulled within two points in the final minute, with a score of 31-29, in favor of RMS. However, the Lady Eagles held on for the win, with Ruehling helping to seal it with a layup with seconds remaining in the game.

Bulldogs 56, Eagles 13

Caleb Carr led the Bulldogs’ offensive attack, as he totaled 16 points on the night, which included a 3-pointer, with nine of those points in the first half, where SCMS went up 21-0 after the first quarter and 41-3 by halftime.

The Bulldogs led 49-8 after three quarters, as the long night continued for the Eagles. Dakota Kilby led the Eagles with eight points, which included two 3-pointers.

In junior varsity action, the Lady Bulldogs won 19-8, and the Bulldogs won 22-12.
